Learn to Row

Learn to Row (Sweep):

Looking for a group activity to share with friends of co-workers? Just want to meet new people while enjoying the outdoors? This course is designed to teach sweep-style rowing (one oar per person, not two) in an 8-oared shell, the largest and fastest boats in the sport. The course fee of $90 helps us defray the cost of coaching, fuel and equipment, and includes over six hours of instruction from our coaches. We recommend workout attire such as shorts and a t-shirt, flip-flops or sandals, a bottle of water and sunblock. Seats are limited to eight (8) per session with a minimum of 4 required. Click on the link to register or go to www.regattacentral.com.

    September Sweep LTR: Sept. 13, 14, 16, 18, 20. Weekends 8-9am, Tues/Thurs 6pm-7pm.
November Sweep LTR: Dates will be posted soon.

*There will be no class in October because we'll all be racing in the first-ever Palm Beach Rowing Regatta, right here in Palm Beach Gardens! Join us in the September class to get up to speed before the regatta.

Learn to Row (Sculling):

Just want to get on the water solo? Interested in rowing with your spouse, friend or child? "Sculling" may be a perfect fit for you. This "Learn to Scull" course will cover the fundamentals of rowing with two oars (or "sculling") in smaller boats than our sweep class. Instruction will begin in our stable, wide training dories and gradually progress into narrower, faster boats. You'll learn proper technique and the basic boat-handling skills needed to become a safe and competent sculler. The cost is $90 for five hours of instruction. We recommend workout attire (shorts, t-shirt, old sneakers or crocs, water, sunblock). Click on the links to register or go to www.regattacentral.com. Seats are limited to six (6) per session with a minimum of 3 required.        This could be you on your next vacation.

March, 2008
NPBRC's masters place 2nd in the Miami International Regatta
. (March 8th '08) In our club's racing debut, the NPBRC team beat two solid crews from Miami Beach RC and was closing in on a fast Miami crew right down to the finish line to ultimately win silver medals. Since this was the first regatta ever for many in the boat, ours was a respectable showing indeed. Details and pictures will follow in our next newsletter. Many thanks to all who were up for this event and hung around despite crosswinds and race delays.

December, 2007
It was a dark and stormy night... but that didn't deter the rowers of NPBRC from racing down to PGA bridge in advance of the 2007 Boat Parade. You wouldn't have believed the roar of the crowds as they saw us, eight soaking wet Santa hats (and one elf) in a 60' shell strung with Christmas lights, whizzing past and dodging boats, wakes, and bridges along the way.
A mere 200m from the boatyard, the skies opened up in a heavy downpour that soaked us through and through, from santa hats to white t-shirts, while dumping several inches of extra water weight in the hull. We must have reached the point of no return, however, because when offered the chance to turn around a thousand meters shy of PGA, all eight rowers piped up with a "heck no, let's keep going!". And I'm glad we did. Rowing past the Juno beach park it sounded as if the entire crowd that lined the shore was cheering us on. Then the Riverhouse - double-decks filled with people, all applauding as we came into view...and on through the bridge to Waterway Cafe, packed to the gills with an enthusiastic and supportive crowd.
Thanks, Palm Beach, for showing us a little love this Boat Parade. And special thanks to the members who made this possible: our awesome social committee, resident engineer extraordinaire, volunteers, novices and old hands alike, and of course the family and friends that saw us on our way. Can't wait till next year! (At right: Rowers enjoy the view from the shoreline after their hard-earned Boat Parade debut)

NPBRC has begun its fundraising campaign to raise $40k for new boats such as a four, quad, recreational sculling shells, and dories. Click here to help us to the finish line.
